Post Running rich?

lately my car has had strong exhaust fumes, i would assume they are rich conditions, i havent pulled a plug yet, it has been running fine though, as far as performance, my last modification was my offroad h-pipe, and 160 stat, i suspect the exhaust smell to be a leak, and of course i have the airtube plugged into the h-pipe, but the smogpump is bypassed, am i getting exhaust leak from there? also one of my o2 sensors was cross threaded, but went in almos all the way, and seems to be working fine.

Thnx for any help on this matter.

Question

Sounds like you could get the exhaust smell fm the smog pump. You sure it might not be gas fumes you're smelling?

No, it's burnt gas, but just smells stronger than normal, this may have something to do with my shifter boot being loose also, i am about to install a new shifter, so i left the rubber boot loose, my car is not blowing smoke or anything, i did post a topic about a week ago about "noisy injectors" it seems they may have been sticking.

thnx for the reply, im gonna pull a plug soon

I sure hope you aren't running any cats! If you are, get ready to replace them.

Take care

With a 160 degree t-stat, no air pump and no cats, I'm surprised the exhaust fumes don't leave you unconscious. Reattach your shift boot, and you'll probably be fine.

Take care

Go back to a 180-195* thermostat. Look up Rebel 79's off road H pipe fix.

Most likely what is going on is your car either isn't heating up fully so it's staying in open loop, or your O2 sensors aren't getting a good read on the exhuast gas because the velocity is too high with that h pipe. Adding a small tab right in back of the O2 sensor is a way to slow the gases down a little bit. Quite a few people have benefitted from that trick Rebel 79 came up with.

Trust me, my car makes most of its power running colder, i will try turning up the fan though, i did read the old "h-pipe fix post" but im not going to mess with that.

idle is also rough, and im thinking i have arching wires, and need to clean tb and iab, i guess it's just time for some maintenace tuneup, and a little time, and cleaning my upper plennum really helped last time it ran sluggish.

Just FYI-
My friends 88 5.0 was running super rich, thick black smoke out of the exhaust. It took us awhile but we figured it out. He was having battery problems one day and had his car jumped, some how hooked it up wrong and sent a surge throught the computer and fried it. He replaced the computer and it fixed the problem.
