Default Another rearend question

Why would you put a 273 gear in a 5 speed car from the factory? I always thought they used 273s for autos and 308s for manual. I looked at my buddies (new) tag on the door and its got a 273 with a 5 speed. I just thought that it was weird.

2.73's were standard with the T-5. 3.08's were optional

3.08's were standard with the AOD. 3.27's were optional
