Default sad dyno numbers

I took my car to the dyno for some carb tuning, we made 10+ pulls, came up with 251rwhp. We were thinking that we were losing some power because my stock ford lifters were collapsing a bit, or my new c4 with kevlar bands were slipping a little yet. Does this look a little low anyway. stock 302,tfs track heat heads, tfs stage2 cam, victor jr,proform 650,all msd stuff,1 3/4 LT's,dumps,c4 dynamic 5k stall,4.10's. the car is gutted with a 6pt bar. I was hoping to get sub 14's but not with these power numbers.

Yeah i'd say that is pretty low, Did they have a wide-band o2 sensor hooked up? Something isn't right if the power is that low, maybe the dyno wasn't calibrated correctly. If the car isn't missing or pinging, if i was you i'd just take it to the track. You can't BS on how fast it actually is, but i have heard of some dyno numbers saying low or high numbers (depending on corrections and calibration) and the car running completely different.

We did have the wide band o2 plugged in. But later had problems with the sensor. We were able to get the jetting dialed in though. I bet my 89 gt stock can make these numbers. Somethings not right. All is new from top to bottom and is running perfect. maybe my combo is crap? The shop owner said that the numbers aren't law get to the track and see what it does. After I get new lifters. Someone turn on the snowmelter.....

A bone stock '89 GT should put down somewhere in the 170-190rwhp area, depending on tranny, etc.

251rwhp is low for the combination, provided it's all put together right and tuned right. You probably have about 310hp at the crank. A lot better than stock, but probably up to 10% or so less than you should. If the C-4 is slipping enough to show up on a dyno, the tranny would have been shot by the end of tuning. I'm not familiar enough with very high stall converters to say how they play into the performance numbers. Your hp numbers are more than adaquate to get you into the 12s with a 1.6 - 60ft.

Something isnt right.

I made 254rwhp and 298rwtq with ported stock heads,stock cam,explorer intake etc...

My current combo similar to yours put down 301rwhp and 330rwtq.

My new combo wich includes some head work on my Canfields and my FTI custom cam should put down 320rwhp and 340rwtq.

What is your timing set at?

I should have also said that that was at 5500rpm. The graph was still going up at that point. I didn't want to run it any higher with only an hour or so of run time since rebuilding the short block. The dyno guy also thought that the converter could be the culprit. But I will get a new set of lifters and wait for spring. Get to the track and see what we can figure out. We also got it jetted correctly, changed springs in the dist, and messed with timing a bunch. I now understand some of the valuable info a dyno can provide.

heh, yea that cam should pull past 6k no problem, thats where the 302 would peak in my opinion.....friend of mine is having some troubles with his c4 also, it was built by "ger" well they went out of buisness shortly after? Now he's having problems, with a h/c/i injected, and 125 nitrous, it wont stall at it's rating, and it's already burned something up, the cooler is one of the best money buys......i tried to talk him out of that conversion

hey dark 5.0, do you still run that explorer intake?

Cool Re: sad dyno numbers

I have heard that a converter will lie to the dyno. Don't worry about the dyno #s. Track testing is the only real way to tune a car. My new combo only shows 280hp on the anlizer. I ran 12.60 @ 111mph not being able to shift the car. I am suppose to have 350hp. I know that I don't.

The shop owner said the same thing. It's really just baseline to measure from. The converter I hope is a quality piece. I bought it from dynamic, it was $600+ but I don't have any time on the car so will have to see. I was hoping it will flash pretty high. And in the end if the c4 doesn't work out, I will get a tremec. The cam is lame. But with stock pistons that was all I could do. I was thinking of adding a 100 shot to it too. I was just curious as to what you people thought. 88workcar nice to see you back.

you only took it to 5500? that half the trouble there. also auto's don't show good hp number with a high stall converter. get it to the track and you will make your goal very easily.

My car hit low 13's/104 at the track with 280/293 on the DynoJet. I'm hoping for a little better now with a new cam and intake manifold. We'll see.

Also might add that the 80% driveline efficiency that Unit 5302 was using is really more for 4-5 speeds. I think the C-4 (especially with a higher stall) is more like 75-77.5% efficiency indicating a little higher flywheel brake hp.

you said you have a "5K" stall......and they pull to 5500, I'd say get some et's and use the analyzer.....

I only wanted to run it up to 5k until the motor had some time on it. But, like a friend of mine from Iowa said.,"there are 2 types of motors, one that's blowed up, and one that's gonna blow up". Well back to the drawing board. Because she went south a couple of days ago.
