Question Sensor on Top of T5?

Saturday I grenaded the tranny in my coupe. Yesterday I was swapping the tranny, and I ran into an interesting question. My old tranny was an 89 tranny, and it has a sensor on top that goes into the houseing, but there is nothing on the inside of the casing!!! It's a push-activated sensor like the reverse lights, but there is nothing to push it. Anyway, the tranny I got out of a 90 didn't have the sensor, just the reverse light one on the side. Anybody know what that useless sensor is for?

My coupe is a 90, and i see a senssor, or a wiring harness going to it. My friend has a 79coupe, and said his car wouldnt run right without it connected, but i havent talked to him in a while.

The car runs mint. A couple of my friends that play with Mustangs told me not to worry about it. I just have the wire hangin under there not connected to anything. Its just wierd because there is nothing on the inside of the top of the case....its just solid metal. The only other thing they told me is that if the car did run different for some reason to just jump the two wires together, but I'm not sure if I should do that or not.

Well i just bit off 5 teeth on the 3rd gear of my tremec and on the top of the case i pulled the sensor and on the inside there was nothing but a tiny little hole, after searching the bottom of the tranny i found a tiny looking push rod stuck to the magnet in the bottom. My dad told me that pin is used to push the ball bearing on the sensor in which in turn actuates the tail lights, but i might not be talking about the same sensor as you guys, but it is the only one on the top of my tranny but its kinda in the front.

I ran into the sam problem when I swithced my tranny with one out of a 84 5.0. I ended up taking off the cover off my 87 and put it on the 84 T-5 and everything fits perfect and works fine. The cover is a ***** to get of so let me know if you need help.

I already put the tranny in the car. It works mint, but I am getting a check engine. Like I already said, a couple of friends of mine have run into this problem and they just left the damn thing off and jumped the wires together to get rid of the check engine. The only thing that I could think of is that it could be a pressure sensor of some sort, but there is no way that the tranny fluid is going to push this thing in...it takes a pretty good push to "activate" it, especially since after a second look, there is a VERY small hole in the casing in front of the forks that fluid can get through. No way fluid goes in there and pushes that b!t(h!!!! Anyway, everybody is saying don't worry and just jump the wires...

I have that same unplugged sensor on mine. I know that fluid pressure does not activate the switch. The case is vented.

Both my 88 and 89 trans's had it.

I have no idea what it is.

Hey exgmguy, you said you have it unplugged too, right? Did you get a check engine, or did you jump the wires together?

it says in my book right here that there is a back up lamp switch on the tranny and on 5.0L there is a neutral sensing switch

Like I said, I already put the tranny in the car and everything is fine except for the occasional check engine. I trust what you are saying, but I don't see how that can be a neutral switch of some sort. The reason I say this is because the sensor screws in off center, and there is a VERY small hole that leads through the casing to the shifter mechanism. The only thing that could go through that hole is fluid, and we already established that this is not a fuid pressure activated switch because the tranny is vented.
At this point this is just out of mere curiousity....

It's a neutral sense switch. I just got my tranny back (twisted the mainshaft in half) and saw this sensor. Out of curiosity I unscrewed it and it has a ball bearing in the end. If you hook a meter up you'll find that it's a normally closed switch, push on the ball and it will open the switch. That hole you're referring to is supposed to have a push-pin installed thru the switch hole, then the switch screwed into place. When you put the shifter into any gear the pin pushes the switch ball and opens. Put the shifter into neutral and the pin goes back in and the switch goes back to closed.

Now the funny part. I just told you all of that and can't think for the life of me why it's there and what part of the car uses it. LOL The car will start with the clutch in no matter where you have the shifter. The only thing I can come up with is the cruise control. If you're running down the highway with the cruise on and you bump the shifter out of gear for whatever reason, the cruise better know about it or it will rev the piss out of your engine!

Anyone else back this up or have any info?

John
