Post Oil Pan Gasket Replacement

I already have the tranny removed from my '86 5.0 Mustang and I would like to replace the leaking oil pan gasket. It appears that the engine must be raised to remove the oil pan. If this is true, how much does the engine need to be raised? Is an engine hoist the best choice or is there an easier method? What must be removed/unhooked before removing the oil pan? Thanks.
