Should I swap in 4.10's for my 3.73's- please read
 
OK, I have an extremely heavy 95GT convertible. The lightest the car has ever weighed when it was pretty much stripped was 3510 without me, or 3680lbs with, but it is normally over 3700 with me. It even weighed in at 3803lbs with me, a lot of gas, and some luggage at Englishtown NJ last year on a 97.2mph pass. Anyway, I just got a set of 165 AFR heads for it that will be milled to 55cc's by Ed Curtis and he will also custom grind my cam for me. He recommended I go with 4.10's in my car with its weight and the cam.
Now, this week I'm having my traction lock rear redone with new clutches and its costing me $65, but a gear swap will only run me about $95 from the same guy, so I figured what the heck, it won't cost much more to have it done now. My cousin also has a set of 4.10's with about 2K miles on them that I can have for real cheap. So should I swap in the 4.10's now since it seems to be the perfect time to do it, or will they be too much for my street car that is a 5 speed? Right now the car is daily driven, but since I got a new job I'll be buying a new vehicle and retiring the stang to nice weather driving. My goal is to have the car trap at around 105mph+ and with some luck maybe break into the 12's. I alsi run Nitto DR's as my street tires. Thanks, I appreciate all input on this.

Most definately do it!

Especially if ED Curtis told you it would be the best thing to do since it would also match your overall combination.

Well if Ed said so... and you also have a good amount of weight in that thing. If you are thinking about unloading the 3.73s let me know. I think I could find a use for them.

4.10s would probably be the correct gear for your goal.

Thanks for all the input guys. I just keep hearing that 4.10's make up for a "weak" motor, and I don't like that saying. I also don't want to install them and hate very minute of it either. I'm just nervous as to whether or not I'm going to hate to drive it with such steep gears. I wish I could find out what my MPH would be at 6000rpm's in 4th, that would help me decide I think too. I found out today that my cousin doesn't want any money for the gears so all I'll have to pay for is the new clutch pack for the rear and the installation of the gears and clutches. I think I will do it. Do you think it will slow me down with my current setup? Not that it really matters, but I'd like to know. Also- am I gonna be approaching the factory rev limiter with these gears in the 1/4? I'm hoping to be at or around 105+.

RJ_STANG- sorry man, my dad just bought the Holley Systemax kit for his 91GT and he wants my 3.73's to replace his 3.55's.

Yes, this can be true. On the contrary, a "strong" higher revving motor excels with more gear because it gets the revs into the powerband faster, which means better ET's. This is especially true for heavy cars.

If you have a 26" tire, you will be turning 113.5 mph with 4.10's.

Thanks JONNYK- that's what Ed told me. He said that since I have such a heavy car I need the extra gear to get me moving and into the power band. Thanks for the info on the MPH at 6000RPM's- that's about what Ed told me tonight. Looks like they are going in this week.

If Ed is custom grinding a cam for you it has a lot to do with the gears you have. FOr instance my Anderson cam is made for a car with 4:30 or higher gears due to the low lift numbers with less gear it would be a PIA at low rpms. Go for 4:10's! http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif

From reading you post title I was going to say no. But now I see how cheap you are gettin them, and I say definatly go for it. Therse only a few % difference that is about 300rpm on the freeway in 5h gear. So I wouldn't worry about it. I think you'll hit 12's no problem.

I run 4.10's and even on the highway it's not bad with the overdrive. I'm glad I did it!

Thanks for all the input. The 4.10's are going in tomorrow along with the new clutch pack so it looks like I'll be ready for the track opener on sunday!!!

Congrats on your time SKY, glad to see you broke into the 12's. What was your rpms at when you crossed the finish line if you remember, the reason I ask is that I hope to around your MPH, so I should be close to the same rpm's you were at when you crossed.

82GT- sorry, my dad is selling them to a local guy around here, but the same guy is having problems with his heads right now, so if he backs out I'll let you know. Ask the guy I told you about doing the instal, he sometimes has gears just laying around his shop. He has tons of T-5 parts too if you need them as well. Hell, Hanlon motorsports calls him when they need a part they don't have!
