Other than sounding like a three dollar lawn mower there's not much advantage to running open headers if the engine is stock. You might get a tad more power out of it at the top of the RPM range. Stock 5.0's sound really sleazy with open headers and all you'd really be doing is making a lot of irritating noise. As for it hurting the engine, it probably won't hurt it. I've heard all my life that running an engine with open headers would cause burnt valves. I personally believe this is B.S. If this was true, there's be a major fortune to be made doing valve jobs at race tracks across the country every weekend.
