How long before the swap did you actually use the A/C? It may be an o-ring dried up and the refrigerant leaked out.

But if you're talking about a short time before the swap then I can't see putting a new motor in and not disconnecting the A/C. The high pressure line runs right over the engine, doesn't it?

The way I see it one of three things happened:

1) You have a slow leak which finally dropped the pressure too low

2) He disconnected the A/C without discharging, venting all the refrigerant into the atmosphere

3) He managed to push the compressor and lines out of the way without disconnecting them and cracked or punctured a line in the process.
