I've been able to get 25 mpg out of a carbed, 3.73 geared mustang. How? Casual driving style, weight reduction (to the order of 400 lbs), underdrive pulleys, a good ignition system, good tuneup, and leaning the mixture a tad. Dont worry about nosediving your milage from a carbed car. _You_ are in charge of setting it up properly but it's not a big deal and you can get very comparable results to FI. If you do end up with a CFI monstrosity, toss the top and put a holley back on. You'll thank yourself once you start making changes to the car.
