4th gear is overdrive. All you need to do is downshift it yourself, pull it down one and it will be in 3rd. The other shift you feel when accelerating at lower speeds is the 3rd to 2nd shift, once its in od it tends to stay there. You can get a shift kit for it or you can even get a valve body that will let you shift it manually with a toggle switch for od. I have one in my car, I got it from Lentech. It sounds like all you need to do is pull it down one to get the results you are looking for though.
