No you don't "need" a new head. What will happen to the power curve is it will nose over a little sooner than an intake with more cross section, but it will make more area under the curve up to that point than a larger cross section intake. It's all about how much area an engine makes under the torque curve over the usable rpm band. If your power band is below 6,000rpm your not giving up a whole lot if anything depending on the combination and especially the cam.
