DOT 3 and 4 are completely compatible and are hygroscopic (they like to absorb water captured inside the fluid). Flushing out the system every 2 years or so with bleeding will keep your whole system in tip-top shape. DOT 5 (silicone) is expensive, and absorbed water will be seperate as it does not absorb water and pool in the lower parts of the system - read calipers, causing them to fail earlier. It does have it's benefits, but is not really a good choice for a street car imo.
