I was wondering is there a limited slip available for my GT from another Ford auto model? If there is what is the make and model I should look for? What is the most desirable gear ratio for an automatic tramsmission?

I take it you have a 1988 Mustang GT auto. You can use an 8.8" rear end from 1986-1993 LX and GT 5.0 for the Mustangs as bolt in replacements, and the later Mustang GT's as well, although they will be wider. Also the 1987-1988 Ford Thunderbirds, which again, will be wider, Turbo Coupes and I think 5.0s got 8.8" rears from the factory in those years. The Turbo Coupe has rear disc brakes as well. The best ratio for an auto is probably 4.10:1. None of the Mustang's, Tbirds, etc came with 4.10's, but the auto 1987-1988 T-Bird Turbo Coupes did have 3.73's. The standard gear for the Mustangs was 2.73 and the optional 3.27. There is more info I can give, but what are you planning here?

I don't know about other vehicles that have the limited slip diff, but the explorer/ranger shares the rear end, so it just might. For an auto, you want 3.73 or 4.10, depending on how hardcore you wanna be

You can use the guts{ring and pinion and posi unit} out of any 8.8 rear. Just check the tag to see if it's a posi the ratio will have an L in it, example 3L73 is a posi 3.73 is open. I would go with 4.10's. RAY

I thought that my Mustang had a 8.8 rear end. It doesn't? As far as what I want to do with this car is to make it perform. Acceleration, braking, handling the whole nine yards, and make it look good doing it. Since I am new to Mustangs that is about all I could tell you. I am working as hard as I can to learn my new car. As far as I know all 88 gt's had 8.8 rears. Up to 85 they had 7.5 and 86 up had 8.8 only 4 and 6 cyls had 7.5. Is it a real gt or something someone tried to make one. The only other thing is if someone changed the entire rear and put a 7.5 in there. What is the tag number on the rear? RAY

			 If it's a 88 GT it has a 8.8 rear-end unless someone blew the orininal rear-end and put in a 7.5. If it's a 7.5 it won't last long.

It is a real GT. It was my father in laws car. I got it for a song and I know how it was maintained, now it is my turn to make it better.

I thought you were talking bolt in rear ends, sorry. As long as the differential you choose is an 8.8", with 28 spline axles, it should go into your car.

All 1986+ V-8 Mustang's have the 8.8" from the factory. LX 5.0 and GT 5.0 from 1986-1993 are direct bolt in 8.8" rear ends. That's all I was saying. |
