Post Removing Trunklid Luggage Rack

Two questions:
1. Why did they put a luggage rack on the convertibles in the first place!
2. Is there an easy way for me to remove the rails myself, fill the holes, and repaint just those areas? Or do I need to take it to a body shop?

Thanks - BOB

I think it was just a carryover from the Mustang II, but i don't know why they put it on that car, ugly and useless.

I was wondering the same thing, perhaps replace it with a whale tail for road racing?

I think that part of the reason for the luggage rack was to incorporate the third break light.I am assuming this since the pre 86 convertables didn't have them.
