Default emmissions testing question

In my area, they started a new thing where inspection garages are supposed to visually inspect the emmissions equipment on vehicles to insure that they were not tampered with in any way.

My question is: Does anyone know how many years they go back?
I'm not worried about my '88 because is all stock but I'm worried about my '82 and if that will be effected by these new laws.
If so, I'm in some deep ***** when I get it on the road this spring.
Can anyone give me some info on this and how far these emmission laws go back?

All states are not the same. Try going to the MVA web site for your state and see if they have the info on the site. Many do.

We've had that in Calif. for a long time now ... here they go back to i believe 1972 ... anything before that is exempt. It does vary from state to state though.

I found out that some cars may be exempt from that law if:

1) The car is driven less than 5000 miles/year
2) It is a classic, antique or street rod
3) If the smog equipment wasn't originally equipt on the car.

That's good for me because I won't ever drive my '82 more than 5K miles a year and plus I'm going to look into getting classic plates for it.
I know it's not original anymore but I've been talking to people who have classic plates and they said you can pretty much take a picture of any classic car and say it's yours i order to get classic plates for the one you have. I don't know if that's true or not but I'm going to find out though.
