Default Question about rear axles

I am thinking of rebuilding my rearend in my car. I was going to buy one from the bone yard and rebuild it. So I was wondering what the difference is in 31 and 28 spleen axles are? Are they both compatable with the OEM differentual?

If anyone has rebuilt one before what do I need to do this in my driveway? Pics would would really help.

31 spline axles are larger in diameter, and are not interchangeable with 28 spline axles.

Take care,

You'll need a 31 spline differential with the 31 spline axles. Like Chris said, the 31 splines have a larger diameter, it's not just the # of splines. You can get a 31 spline Trac Lok unit out of an F-150 I believe and pick up a set of Moser or Superior axles. You don't need to go with c-clip eliminators unless you have a dedicated drag car that goes 10.99's or faster, my experience has been that they are not very compatible with street cars.

yeah chris is right. Unless you got a significant amout of hp or your launching hard theirs no sense in changing your axles. I can hook ya up with a set of strange 40 splines.

not getting out of racing. Just looking out for the future. I wanna go after some outlaw 10.5 races and the car i have now just isn't good for that. I'm thinking of trading for a outlaw 10.5 68 Camaro that's already set up ready to go. Still running some figures in my head deciding what i wanna do. Theirs alot more money in outlaw racing than their is NMRA racing or Pro series. And plus it's fun to see how fast you can go on a small tire!!
