4.10 or 3.73 ratio, at least for your '95 convert with AOD.

Lower rear differential gears give no HP gain (that's in the engine) but they will increase the transfer of torque to the rear wheels and you accelerate faster. Basic Mustang mod; about $200. for the gears alone. The only negative is that you may use a little more gas and lose a tiny bit on the top end. If the gears aren't installed properly, they can whine and wear out quickly. While your mechanical friends are working in the pumpkin, check the Traction - Lok discs as they often need rebuilding, too. Low-cost repair; big gain.

Consider installing an AOD shift kit, too. Again, no HP gain but faster, harder shifts for better performance. About $100. Change the fluid to synthetic, too.

Plenty.

...and are they worth it?

No, not on a basically stock engine. Save your money.

Yes, you can. You need a timing light, an ignition wrench and some chalk. If you have friends who can install rear gears, ask them to advance your timing and show you what to do. It's fairly simple and takes about 10 minutes.

...any other ideas would be appreciated a ton. im going for flat out HP cause i got all the sound i need.

Remove the air silencer (free), install a K&N filter and remove your catalytic converters or get low-restriction cats ($200. - up) as they waste a lot of HP.

Underdrive pullies ($100.) are worth some HP (about 5-7) but you need a excellent charging system or you'll have 'battery' trouble.

Sub-frame connectors are a good investment for your 'vert (about $100. - $150.) They stabilize the body for better launches and overall handling. Be sure they're welded - not just bolted - in.

For $800. (or less) Do the gears, shift kit, cat removal/replacement, sub-frame connectors, pullies, K&N, timing advance plus a total tune-up (plugs, plug wires, distributor cap & rotor, gas filter, PCV replacement and check of your TPS and cleaning of the IAC/throttle body and you should notice a big difference in your Mustang's performance.

thanx...well i have the k&n and basically new plugs and got a full tune up no longer than 6,000 miles ago. i had a shift kit put in by the guy the rebuilt my transmission. he said it was just sittin around cause he usually only does trucks so he tossed it in for free (well a 24pack). he said he tried to mess around with it but he didnt know much about mustangs. i know the car shifts much harder than other cars and i can feel it kick when it does that. i just need to adjust the timing of the shifts.

i dont mind too much on the gas so a bigger gear is what i would need. it sounds like i shouldnt care too much about HP but more on take offs and low end torque cause thats mainly what im lookin at. i also have front and rear sway bars if that is what you mean by the sub frame connectors. i can handle a turn goin pretty fast.

oh yeah, can a mustang pass emissions with only two cats?? cause i heard of people breaking the ceramic inside of two of their cats and blowing that out so it just leaves the shell. figure that would do something but not sure. thanx again

Lightbulb Mods

FYI: Sub-frame connectors are two thick steel rods (tubular is best) that actually connect the front and rear subframe of the car together - which is a big advantage in both handling and stabilizing it for better launches.

If you already have a shift kit then a 4.10 rear axle gear should do a lot for your Mustang. It'll feel like you added about 50 HP. - honest.

I have no idea about passing emissions with only two cats but it may well be possible. If you don't want to go for low-restriction cats, I would suggest buying and installing an H-pipe and just saving the factory pipe and converters to re-install at inspection time. Cheaper and solves the emission 'problem' that many states present.

I suggested the mods I did because before you can get to the big HP makers (heads, intake, exhaust, mostly) you need to have a car set up to take advantage of the (future) added power. Adding 75 HP to a car that has a crappy rear axle ratio, a sloppy transmission, spins on one tire and flexes on launches is a bad idea.

The gears, sub-frame connectors and other mods will get your '95 in top running condition and have you ready for the big stuff later (if you want) but still make the 'Stang faster and more fun to drive right now.
