Default how does it look?

Finally got this motor halfway apart and I dont know what I am looking at.This is to be my spare motor that I will tinker with from time to time. This car was ran hard since bought new in 92 and I need to know if it is in good shape to use this block.I searched and found little on this matter so I will try to post a pic. This block has about 116k miles and was running fine when I parked it.I just decided to replace and upgrade the motor as it was very tired but just would not die.Does this cylinder look normal?they are all the same as this and I know nothing of crosshatching. What can I look at to determine if this block is worthy of a spare motor?

I really would not know what a bad cylinder looked like but I will take your word for it.I searched and read a lot about a ridge in the cylinder walls that builds up over time.I cant find a ridge in mine.Is it on the top and should I be able to feel it with my finger?I am just trying to determine the amount of wear this engine has had as it was ran very hard.If I have no ridge is that a good thing?

yeah it is a good thing, the ridge is caused by the rings wearing down the cylinder, so it leaves a ridge at the very top where the rings dont ride. the dark spot on the very top of the cylinder wall is where the ridge would be. thats surprising to see that much cross-hatch with that many miles. you could probably feel it with your finger...if there is a ridge there.

is the cross hatch left from the original machining of the block? does that mean that there's so little wear that it hasnt smoothed out the walls?

I want to know how you keep you garage so clean????? I would say the motor actually looks about normal for a lte model high milage unit that has been taken care of bore it out 30 put some fresh pistons and bearings in it and go another 100+k.

Sn95gt19...what do I need to look for on the bearings to determine the wear?I have not got the pan or bottom end off yet but it is soon to come. And shaggy to answer your question is I live alone and my garage is a prized area of mine.I like it to be neat and I am very picky.I find it much easier to work on my car with it neat.I get confused enough as it is and a mess would make it worse.I really feel for the guys that have done this same project in the outside weather.....love my garage

I have plenty of room also and nothing but time..this was the beginning of my ordeal. You can kind of see all the room in front of the car.I have 2 cars on the opposite side.

Ah, I remember those days, living alone, garage to myself, working on the stang all day and night with friends....yeah, good times.

Be careful, that could all change very quickly if you meet the wrong woman....

Mach, thanks for the advice and yes it is very nice to have all this time to myself.I know someday it will all be a distant memory but I will enjoy it while it lasts.I am removing my pistons and rods now and need to know what to look for as far as determining the amount of wear and tear on these parts.I think the bearings look fine but honestly I have never seen bearings after removal so I cant tell.I will try to post pics shortly of the rods and bearings...thanks

Probably wouldnt kill you to order the factory maintenance manual (www.helminc.com) for you car. It contains everything you need to know and look for, specifications, etc... for tearing down your motor.

Good luck

since your taking it all the way apart, you are going to throw new bearings in it anyway right? if they have grooves or copper showing they are pretty worn out.
