Default Need help decoding head casting numbers

Ok, my neighbor/uncle has a set of 1970 302 heads that were suppost to be original on his 1970 Mustang Fastback. But we got to looking at them and they are two different casting nimbers. One is DOUE-AA and the other is DOOE. What do these numbers means. I know the "DO" means 1970 but I can't figure out the rest. If I get these heads can I put them on a engine or are they too different?

I have no listing for DOUE-AA. These are old heads. Are you sure the casting # hasn't deteriorated at the top of the O and makes it look like a U. I have run into this with old blocks/heads.

The closest I have for you is DOOE-B(302 63cc 1.78/1.45) or DOOE-C or G(351 60.4cc 1.84/1.54). Do the DOOE have an AA after like the other head?

Good luck. I would not use them if they are mis-matched.

Ok I pull all the casting numbers off of them.

Head A)
1) combustion side: DOUE AA, 302, 7
2) exhaust manifold side: 10
3) rear side: AK44
4) where to rockers are: WF, 13579, 2L24

Head B)
1) combustion side: DOOE, 302 69, 3, B
2) exhaust manifold: 14
3) rear side: H(or I) 6(or 9) W(or M),
4) where the rockers are: 302, B(the B is embossed on a plate that is bolted to the head), 13579, 0D20

Now I'm confused. One one head the casting number is DOOE which is 1970, but it has 302 69 stamped on the same head.

My guess is that one head has been replaced, or that there was a mixup at the factory. Or there was a part change over. Say on a friday they ran out of one casting so they threw a different one to keep the line running.

Do they appear physically the same ie. valve sizes, port sizes, CC look identical. I would be skeptical of getting these heads. Like I said I have no listing for DOUE.

They were "suppost" to be original heads, but I think whoever had the car before him swaped them out or something.

It appears to be a "U" I don't think it was a "O", but I'll post some pics and let you decide for yourself.

Nevermind I did some more scraping and what I thought was "DOUE" is really "D3UE". So this means that I have a 1970 cylinder head and a 1973 Cylinder head. I'm assuming that because of emissions requirements that the 1973 head has a bigger combustion chamber. The valves are the same size in both heads. Will the 1973 head still work with the 1979 (and performe well)? I don't think it will, but I thought I would ask anyway.

Don't use the heads. One side will have high comp. the other will be lower. This will really upset the motor, as you will have timing/fuel delivery issues that can never be worked out cause of the comp. ratio differences.

You'd be better off finding some E7TE heads. That's too bad about the heads because they would have worked good if the 73 matched the 70. BTW I can't even find a listing for the D3UE head. Nothing I have even has a 3U digits. I'd be curious as to what that head is.

Good Luck.

I found out. The "D3UE" is a head off of a 1973 Mercury Zepher.
