Default 79-81 Mustang.

Someone please enlighten me, I wasn't aware that there was a windsor powered mustang between 79-81. According to my repair manual they only had the 4 cyl, 6, cyl and a 255 v-8. Is my book wrong or are these all converted cars.

the 255 is a weird version of the 302... better off to swap a 302 into it... I dont think the intakes even interchange...

1979 had a 140hp version of the 302. From 1980-1981 the 4.2L or 255ci V-8's engine was nothing more than a 302 with a smaller bore. So technically, it would have been a windsor as well. They aren't worth working though.

No Ford Mustang '79 - present (except for the 351 Saleens) came with a 351W in it. They are all converted cars.

I think theres a bit of confusion here on what a windsor is
a 302 is a windsor also but a lot of people only refer to the
351w as a windsor but the w only ther to distigush it from the
351c 351m. but the 302 289 and 255 are all windsor also.
windsor becuase they were all oringinaly made in widsor canada.
and the 351 in clevland just trying to help clear things up
i used to always get confused when somone would say windsor
so i did the research and got the story right.
the 79-8? also came with a straight 6 if you had car with that
youd have to get a v-8 k member for anyone wondering

Yep, thats the one I'm converting the 3.3L I-6. Fortunately we have a few good pull it yourself salvage yards where I can get the front end parts fairly cheap. because I'll junk it before I put another I-6 in it. I can also get the engine at the same salvage yard for under a hundred but I will have to rebuild it before I put it in.

hey unit, in thought the 255 was a destroked 302, not underbored? i am 90% sure of this. regardless, get a nice 302 or a 351. get rid of the k member, swap it in, and enjoy.

a 4cyl and v-8 kmember are the same so either would work
the best kmember would be from a late 80s or 90's because they
are lighter.

also the 255 and 302 look the exactly the same on outside
so make sure your getting a 302 a 86 and up or 87 if its a high
output would be best because there is a lot of improvment over the older ones and the ho comes with trw forged pistons straight from ford you dont want an 86 unless you bore it because it comes with flattops with no valve reliefs wich limits cam choices
and the heads suck to. just tryin to help you out a bit.

foxandfoe your post isn't entirely true. The 351W was called a winsor because it was made at the windor plant. The 351C was made at the cleavland plant. Since a lot of 351W parts interchanged with 289-302 parts, the 289-302 started being called windsors. Even though most were produced at the cleavland plant.

Man, I know WAY to much about Fords.
