Default Direction of the oil port on lifter

I started putting my new (Ford) roller lifters in and noticed the oil port on one side.

Is there a specific direction, up or down, that it is supposed to be?

Didn't pay attention when I took the old ones out.

Does it matter? My manuals don't mention this at all.

Thanks,
Dan

I'll be the dumb one; I'm not sure what you're talking about. The lifters I'm familiar with have a port on the side, in a recessed groove, where the oil goes in, and a port (one-way valve) on top, where the oil goes to the pushrods.

Take care,
-Chris

Chris,

I figured this might be one of those strange questions.

It is the port on the side that you just described.
Because of the roller direction, it will either be pointing/angling upwards or down (kind of outboard).
Don't know if the oil might be coming from a certain direction or draining out or whatever......could more oil stay in the lifter after shut down if the hole was up.....?????

Default Now I get it!

I understand what you're asking now (it was the outboard comment that did it). I was tripping on how you thought you were going to put a roller lifter in "upside down"!! You can install it either way. The recessed groove that surrounds the lifter body will fill with pressurized oil, and once that happens, the hydraulic effect will keep the same pressure through it regardless of the holes location. Good question! No one has ever asked me that one before.

Take care,
-Chris
