ugh too much Cartech??
grrrrrr so I traded my cracked GT-40 for a Cartech box with a ported stock lower. As you can tell by my sig I really have NO mods. I thought this intake would be great for my future blower application, but now that I have decided to plunk all the $$$ into the heart of the 306, I think that this intake may be overkill. It doesn't feel TOO bad with the 4.10s, but I felt a drastic bottom end loss. Should I ditch the box?
My plans for the 306 are shady at best. Probably GT-40Ps or TFS(best case scenario) and a mild cam. Could this possible combo make the Cartech worth it? Or since I'm going to stay NA for a while should I just swap it for something with a better low/mid range? Help... ------------------ Elisha (Mustangbelle) 1994 GT: Cartech intake,4.10s, full exhaust, and pulleys. Sold the 1986 LX sedan http://www.geocities.com/mustangbelle_306 AOL name: GT306Chick |

(just woundering)is your car an aod? if it is what does it run in the 1/4 mile with the mods it has right now?
If you have the money ditch the box until you get your blower if you want low end power. But keep it if you like high rpm's ,but just leting you know the gt40p's or the tfs heads are not made for high rpm's right out of the box. |

ummmm.. joey, the stock TFS heads flow 250cfm intake. They are the most aggressive street heads you can get out of the box.
They can turn the kind of r's the cartech likes. Depends on the blower you choose. I know you were liking the Kenne Belle, for which you are going to want the GT 40 lower, and it'll replace the Cartech upper. |

If you plan on running your stock block, crank, rods, pistons and not planning to rev it over the 6250rpm limit get yourself a long runner intake like the cobra, edelbrock performer, etc, etc. you will have great torque(read more fun on the street) and great power up high for racing. The box style intakes are more geared towards the all-out racer with a built short block built for racing and the higher rpm's ------------------ Paxton Blown 87GT ICQ#112698436 |

I'm with Mustanguy. Lots of hardcore street racers have tried for years to get plenum/box-style uppers to work with NA combos without much luck. I think it'd even be overkill with the TFS heads. I think you'd be much happier with a longer runner...like the ones Mustanguy mentioned. I'd go with something like a Systemax or something.

You couldn't possibly make a worse choice for an intake on that car. If your car is stock then it is heavy and taking all that torque out of it is going to make it very slow.
Even if you do get heads you will most likely NOT turn over 6000 RPM on a regular basis which is what it is going to take to utilize that box. If you want a good long runner intake see if you can locate and extrude honed Cobra or and Edelbrock RPm..both will support up to 6500 RPM very easily on a 306. If you are stuck with the box for a while, throw a 1" phenolic spacer in between the upper and lower to get a little bit of runner length back. I hope this helps and good luck! ------------------ 91 coupe, SVO block 380 windsor, Brodix Neal heads, Super victor spyder intake, 90mm Accufab, 160 lb. What a great idea! I do have a spacer too. I hadn't even thought of that...yay!
I'll remove the upper this weekend and let you know if I feel any difference. Thanks again! ------------------ Elisha (Mustangbelle) 1994 GT: Cartech intake,4.10s, full exhaust, and pulleys. Sold the 1986 LX sedan http://www.geocities.com/mustangbelle_306 AOL name: GT306Chick |

HA
HA HA Actually the Cartech itself barely fits under a stock hood. The guy that I traded with had to cut that fireproofing stuff out of his hood so it would fit, and it was still close. A friend of mine said he would trade his upper and lower Cobra plus $100 for the Cartech. He has 2 and wants to polish it then sell it. Hopefully I can meet up with him this weekend and throw that bad boy on my car. I'll let you know! ------------------ Elisha (Mustangbelle) 1994 GT: Cartech intake,4.10s, full exhaust, and pulleys. I just won a cartech upper with a truck lower this weekend. I'm trading my friend with an s-trim for his polished cobra plus $200.00. I have a 92 vert I'm going to throw it on. I'm not a hugh fan of the cobra intake but I'm just throwing it on my second mustang. If I were you I'd try to find someone running an edelbrock and trade it with them (providing they also have a blower)

If you run a Cobra and want to make serious power, have the lower hand ported and then have the upper extrude honed. If you get a head/cam combo that needs more than that then step on up to something like the TFS R, you will start giving up some low end at that point unless your head porter is very skillful.

ARGH!
Well I just talked to my friend, and his other Cobra intake is not done being polished, so that is out of the question. The only available option is to put his stock intake on my car. *ugh* stock I said??? I guess that would be better than the Cartech right? And, I would only have to swap the upper, since I can just keep the stock ported lower on. What do you guys think? Then maybe I can repaint the Cartech and sell it faster. A pic is on my site: www.geocities.com/mustangbelle_306, on the main page at the bottom left. ...Its an ugly mofo... ------------------ Elisha (Mustangbelle) 1994 GT: Cartech intake,4.10s, full exhaust, and pulleys. Sounds like a plan to me, Elisha.
I don't think you'll ever wanna run the Cartech, and the stock intake should be okay, better low end anyway. That and getting a few $$ for the Cartech will make you smile! |
