I had the same thing happen to my car right after i bought it. I was driving up the road and the car started surging a little, but it didn' stop there. It ran fine for another five minutes, then i went to hit the gas and nothing happened, when i pushed in the clutch the rpm's dropped to zero and the car wouldn't start. I let it sit, banged on the gas tank and it worked fine again, for a while. I ended up replacing the fuel pump and it hasn't givin me a problem since.
