Cooling Problem
I have an overheating problem. The water pump, thermostat and fan clutch are brand new. If the timing were advanced too much at idle could it cause it to run hot. Its not just running hot. The cars turns on the the needle on the gauge moves slowly but it just keeps on going up. I have removed the egr plate and valve and run an edelbrock performer 289 intake. I was reading to try and narrow down what my problem is. I found that the egr system actually has a cooling affect because it dilutes the mixture. Could this cause an overheating problem.
I have bubbles, just a few tiny bubbles in the radiator while running so the head gaskets are gonna go. The heads are going to the shop to make sure they're not warped. The reason I want to be sure about the egr is that it will determine which intake goes back on. My stocker has the egr passsage while the performer 289 does not. Once I get a good seal on the heads and the timing is correct I shouldn't have any problem without the egr should i? Or should I put the stock one back on cause running the performer intake with the stock heads is stupid anyways? Need some opinions.

All other things working properly, the EGR shouldn't cause you to overheat. Right now, it's just another piece in the pie of reasons why you're running hot, but the head gasket is the biggest.
Take care, -Chris

Not to undermind you, but did you instal the stat correctly, people mess this one up all the time, also does the fluid actually boil, or is your gauge giving you bad readings, air bubbles, and i mean serious air bubbles can cause it, try draining the system and start over, also a 160 stat is not good, its open all the time, never allowing coolant to stay in the rad long enough to cool. Try that.

I am pretty sure the Tstat was installed correctly. But the intake manifold is off and the heads are off at the shop right now. One was definately warped. I used a straight edge and could tell it was warped. So I am getting that fixed and should have the heads back on this weekend. Hopefully that will fix my cooling problem. PKRWUD- thanks for the info about the egr.
