I don't think the cables are long enough or flexible enough to just get snagged and wrap around the driveshaft. The lead things on the end would most likely just bounce off the shaft giving it a good polish. The sound kind of sucks so what you did sounds fine.

When I said whole assembly, I just meant the one short cable that goes through the separator and the separator. Not the handle or anything like that.
