![]() I've heard the Explorer intake dynos the same as the Cobra or GT40, but the numbers I have seen place the Explorer at 189cfm average, where the Cobra is at 199, and the GT-40 is 200.
The GT-40P heads wern't redesigned so the Explorer could be a hi po machine. The combustion chamber had to be redesigned to meet new more strict air standards. Ford would have liked to use the 4.6L in the Explorer I'm sure, but that engine was in huge demand, and it wasn't suitable for truck use at the time. The engine bay would have needed to be enlarged too. They decided to use the venerable 5.0. When they redesigned the heads to burn cleaner, I'm sure they added some higher flowing castings partially due to the demand they expected from the Mustang aftermarket scene. They definately wanted good flow down low, and the GT-40P heads delivered quite nicely. The Explorer intake, GT-40P heads, and a mild cam can be setup to produce 320hp pretty easily. It's a good N/A steet setup for sure. As mentioned it will require special headers, and some minor modifcation. |
