Question Harmonic Balancer?

I've got a strong vibration around 3-4000 on the shifter. It doesn't matter if the car is moving or not.I'm going to get the driveshaft balanced anyway but what about this harmonic balancer? Where is it and how much is one to replace. Is there any way to narrow down the vibration? It doesn't make any difference if clutch is in or out. Help! Thanks. 91,5.0L

Well if the clutch is in and it even does it at a standstill with the engine revving, it's engine and not drivetrain.
The harmonic balancer is the very bottom pulley connected to the crankshaft, it is the pulley that has the timing marks on it. These do sometimes go bad. I have replaced mine with a Fluidamper when I had a bad vibration once, but it turned out to be the flywheel instead. The balancer is actually pretty expensive. I believe (it was a long time ago...) mine was like 375.00 from Summit.
Good luck, and I hope you find the vibration. I am dealing with a bad vibration in my car now that I believe might be the driveshaft, but am not sure, and it's driving me nuts, so I know how you feel!!!

A new balancer from Ford is about $90. Not near as good as a Fluidampr, but suitable for those not willing to shell out $350 on a new one.

I am having a somewhat similar problem, except I get a bad vibration around 70 mph+. My problem is drivetrain. If you get the vibration at the same rpm no matter what gear, your problem is probably either teh balancer or the flywheel, so I personally would not waste my money on the driveshaft. My balancer has elastomer hanging out of it, so I'll have to replace mine also. I priced one for $79.99 @ Advance Auto Parts, the hell with $350!!!! You might want to get a balancer puller also for less than $20 to keep from messing your crankshaft. Good luck.

Cool

FWIW, I had a bad vibration in my car... 3k RPM or so... ended up being the fan clutch... seized up... drove me crazy trying to find it till I tried to turn the fan by hand... ;-)

FYI you can rent a balancer puller from auto zone etc for free. Just put money down and they'll give it back when you return it.
