Default Starting Problems When Hot?!?

Friends car:
86 Coupe, Police Package, stock, 5.0 w/auto, EFI

The car starts fine first thing in the morning or when the weather is cooler, once it gets hot outside, or the car has been driven for awhile, it doesn't want to start after being shut off. Once the car sits for a couple hours it starts again.

Sorry, this is how it's been described to me, I'm haven't experienced it first hand.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks.

Jeremiah Alexander

Sounds like the TFI module is bad.

My car does the same thing. I have an 86 GT w/93 H.O. motor, it turns over pretty fast when it's cool, but after I drive for a while or it's hot out it turns over real slow, but it starts. A few times it turned over so slow I didn't think it would start, but it did. I figured maybe it was the starter getting too hot, maybe a heat shield would help? Anyone else have any ideas?

429, it sounds like you need a hi torque starter.

Comatose, I'd say it's either the TFI, or the pickup inside the distributor.

Agreed.

As shown, there are different examples of a hard start / no start condition. You need to be specific as to the symptoms, but since it's for a friend, i know that's tough. If the starter itself never seems to be experiencing any problems, then I agree with it being the TFI. But, if the starter dogs out when it gets hot, it could be a worn starter, bad cables, a weak battery, or any combination of the three.

Take care,
-Chris

Thanks for the replies.

There are no problems with the starter or cables, it turns over fine, simply doesn't start. Is it possible to test the TFI? If yes, how? If not, how much are they?

BTW--How can I change my user name??!
