Default Idle problems

Got an 88GT - the idle is all over the roadmap. Sometimes it idles fine, sometimes climbs up between 1500-2000, sometimes doesn't idle at all, foot off gas and clutch in - engine simply dies.

Did you try removing and cleaning your IAC? They have a tedency to get gunged up and start sticking.

Ive got a same problem with my 72 mach. When i first start the car it has a tendency to try to die. I feather the gas peddle. If i put it in drive or reverse right away after starting it the RPM drops way down and wants to die. I have to let the RPM get up to 1000 in park before I can actually drive it without it dieing. Once i have been driving for a couple of minutes its warmed up and in drive its at about 800 rpm. Sounds great but when i put it in nuetral or park it goes up to a 1400 rpm. too high I beleive. anyone help?

What is the IAC?

Here's what we did today - sometime ago we took the stock air filter off and put a K&N cononical on to increase air flow. Talked to our local mustang performance shop, and he suggested the K&N might be causing the problem with the stock speed density setup on the 88s. Went back and put the stock air filter & air box back on and see what happened. Ran really great no idle problems.

Sounds like a choke problem. What kind of carb do you have, and when is the last time it was serviced or rebuilt?

Take care,
~Chris
