to those with A4/R302 blocks...
Are these hard to setup? Where do you get things like freeze plugs, cam bearings, and whatnot? Or are they the same as the 5.0? Do these blocks take roller cams or only flat tappet? I'm halfway considering getting one and putting a stroker kit in it. Is there anything special I need to do to make it work like a normal 5.0? Any major differences? How much power can a B-50 block hold?

I could only wish that I had the cash to buy a a4 or a r302 it must be nice. Here is what I found in my FMS catalog.
The r302 is a wet sump roller block with no water jackets between the cilinder bore. It uses the same cam bearings, and main bearings that a normal 5.0 block could. I'm guessing all is the same for the a4 except it has water jackets unlike the r302. ------------------ 347 W/ A-trim 6#'s, Canfield heads, out of the box Systemax II intake, solid roller cam. 11.1 @123mph 1.46 60FT 93lx 5.0 daily driver MY CAR http://www.mustangworks.com/cgi-bin/...splay.cgi?1288 |

Well...here's the deal. I'm building a turbo motor that will be in a street car (b@stards at the local track won't let me race) that will be shown occassionally. I haven't deicded on a single or twin turbo but I want the motor to be a 331. Problem is, the place that I was planning on buying the 331 from says it makes about 425hp NA (if you can call that a problem) and I'm worried that with the turbo(s) that the block won't be able to take it. Is there any place out there that sells a short block with the B-50 block?

You can forget the R block then.
You'll get about 1/2 way to the Quick E Mart before you overheat. |

I think the B-50 blocks are supposed to be exactly the same as the stock blocks but thicker where it counts and a higher nickel content.

You could put a main girdle in a stock block and it should easily handle 600hp as long as you have the rotating assebly balanced.

Not sure if the B50 block is the new Sportsman block or not...but if it is, then definitely go for that block. The stock blocks can take up to 5 even 600 horse with a main girdle and good assembly, but they dont live there long. If you do any street driving in that hp. range you will wear out the block quickly. The new Sportsman block looks a lot line a HiPo 289 block if you've ever seen one, the mains look a little larger than the mexican block, and the webing looks very tough. In the svo catalog they rate the block to 600hp for semicontinuous usage, keep in mind that the R302 is rated at 1200hp and continuously sees well over that figure in many Pro5.0 cars.

Shawn, yes the B50 block is the "new" Sportsman 302 block. mmmmm BEEFY, I love that block. Unless it's going to be making over 750 or so hp, then there is no real need for a R302.

I finally found a place who can build a shortblock with the B50 block. Woohoo! Anybody know if the specs on these are the same as a stock 5.0 block? Main thing I'm concerned about is the cam and whether or not it'll fit. Anyone know if these are roller blocks?
