![]() The ONLY chips worth money are the ones a professional tuner makes with YOUR car on the chassis dynamometer, and has the chip custom made for YOUR car. I had a pooper-chip in my '87. It made a horrible pinging up above 3500rpm @ WOT, made it run rich (had to clean my tailpipes every couple days!), and didn't make troubleshooting any easier. Since the conversion to Mass Air, I haven't had a single complaint. Better mileage and no pinging....well only complaint is lack of traction now!
![]() The only company I can really say makes a better computer product is Saleen, who makes an entire performance computer box. It completely replaces your stock EEC computer. Unfortunately, those computers are available only for 1997-2001 Mustangs only. My best advice to you is to unlock the potential of your engine one step at a time and let the computer alone. Ford's EEC-IV is a VERY versatile unit and requires very little -- if any -- tweaking, until you get into the upper power levels. Read "upper power levels" as 500+ Horsies. You don't say what year, model, engine, or transmission you have, much less your modifications (or those planned), so until then I can't help you in any specific areas. Hope this didn't discourage you. Good luck. ![]() ------------------ Capri306, Moderator, The Mustang Works Online 1979 Mercury Capri, 5.0L -- C4 -- 2.73 1987 Mustang LX Notch |

![]() I just ordered a JMS chip (custom, but not as custom as Capri306 is talking about.)
I should have it in a about a week with a trip to the local track a few day later. So, I should be able to give you my opinion on the chip soon. Note, however, that this "chip" is one of my last mods (before the ATI ProCharger next year) on my Stang. I have heads, cam, TB, intake, blah, blah, ...you get the picture. I ordered my chip for 3 reasons: 1) My car seems to run very rich (plugs are dark and gas wet, exhuast about knocks me down, etc.); 2) I am very close to 12's in N/A and street trim form....and I really want to go 12's before I add the blower; 3) With all my mods, the car has, at times, idling issues (high/low, random). And to be honest with you, I really think that wiht all of the components I've added, I really don't think I have the car tuned right. So we'll see what happens. What type of mods do you have? ![]() Saleen a better computer product? why? because its a box instead of a chip, and marketed that way? Same thing, a computer with some reprogrammed data, does the same as a chip the way i see it.

![]() 302 lx eric,
Please do let us know how it works out. I have a JMS coming to me in the mail, but my motor won't be running by the time you get your chip. Well, it might be running but I have an emissions sniffer test to pass and a huge learning curve to tackle before I hit the strip. Be sure to post your thoughts as well as any performance enhancements. good luck! ![]() I've talked w/ tons of people and read many articles.....my choice was a JMS chip. It's reasonably priced ($302), and from all the research I did, I'd have to say that Chris Johnson knows how to tune a chip. Mines not in yet, even though it's very fast, it still feels like it could use some good tuning.

![]() Stang_ROTY: Yes, I will definately keep you and the other members updated on my results. I have always been very skeptical about "chips" in general, but JMS seems to be different. They asked me a ton of technical questions about my car, my mods, etc. I am really looking forward to seeing the results. I may also do a dyno tune for comparison purposes. My last dyno (same mods, just no chip) was 290 RWHP and 312 RWTQ.
As for ordering a chip, I just called them directly at (601) 766-0200. I surfed their web site for a while (www.jmschip.com) to see what they were about. Hope this helps, E ------------------ 1991 5.0 LX Coupe - 38,000 miles 13.17 @ 106.14 mph w/ 2.138 60' [This message has been edited by 302 LX Eric (edited 06-20-2001).] |
