Question Rear End Gears

Ok I have an 88GT. I want to change gears. I would like 3.27 or 3.55. Prefer 3.55 What year and vehicles would I find these? I know the 8.8 rear end is very popular. Also is there a way to find out what gears are in as car without removing the cover?

Thanks

3.27 came from the factory from all 99 and up v8's. The 03 cobra is the only one i know of to have factory 3.55's. The tag on the rear cover has a code which will tell you what gear it came from the factory with. I dont know the codes but i am sure someone else on this board does. Why not just buy a brand new 3.55 from Ford? They are only 175$, and would cost about 175-250$ to be installed.

Default gears

The gears in the US maybe $175 but in Canada there $275 so I'd like to find a doner car or truck.

if you really wanted you could send me the money and I'll ship em to ya as a "gift" so you won't have to pay taxes or anything on em. I mean this in all seriousness too. If you don't trust me, im sure theres someone on this board that would be willing to do it for ya that you do trust.

IMO 3.55's are a huge waste of time/money, not to mention 3.27's

You can find a set of 3.73 gears in alot of full size F150 pickups, and alot had 3.55's too.

The way you can tell what the gear is in the rear is by doing this:
Jack up the rear of the car so both wheels are off the ground. Put car in neutral.
Then mark a spot on both the wheel and the driveshaft.
Count how many times the driveshaft turns for ONE revolution of the wheel. This is the gear ratio. with a 3.55:1 rearend, the driveshaft will turn aproxiately 3 and 1/2 turns for one turn of the wheel. But make sure that the wheels are turning in opposite directions and at the same speed when turning one of them, because if not, then you wont get an accurate ratio. (if this is the case, turn the driveshaft by hand and count how many revs you turn it while someone is watching the wheel)

or you could always remove the differential cover and count the teeth on the ring and pinion gears. divide the # of teeth on the ring gear by the teeth on the pinion to get the ratio.

Or do as Agent_4573 suggested

ok, with a 30 pounds shipping weight, it would be around 230 dollars american for the gears to be shipped to ontario. I'm not sure what part your in so i just guessed. (not 230 for the shipping, 230 for the gears w/ shipping)

i estimated high on the shipping weight too, so it would probably come out a little less.

Where do you live?

You might want to cross the border and buy them. Performance parts cost a freaking fortune here in Canada!

I miss the good part prices in the USA.
