Question Powermaster alternator charge wire?

I have a 140 amp powermaster alternator on my car and have the battery mounted in the rear hatch. I hear you need a large gauge wire to run from the alternator to the battery. What size do I need. Will a too small of a wire not let the unit work? I have had problems with the battery not staying charged. COuld it be from too small of a wire? Anybody with this set up please let me know how you have yours set up. Thanks
