Default Normal rear end behavior?

Lately I've noticed something.. During acceleration, ONLY in 2nd gear, there's a whine...sounds like a differential whine....goes away once it hits 3rd gear. Also...decellerating, RIGHT when it's in Overdrive and the tranny downshifts to 3rd gear (which is a very very rough downshift by the way), there's another loud whine that sounds like the rear. Is this normal behavior? I've got 4.10 gears in it, and the differential cover was warped...I was leaking gear lube for a little bit, then the tranny shop serviced it but the jackasses didnt replace the leaking cover, so when they put it back on it opened up and leaked like a MOTHER...had to have it serviced all over again..and plus the scumbags didnt put friction modifier in it. I'm just wondering if what I described sounds like gear wear, possibly caused by a low gear lube fluid level? Thanks everyone!

That sucks! I can't believe they didn't put the friction modifier in it! Has this noise just showed up since all this rearend stuff happened? If so, you probably have some gear where. How long did you drive it without the friction modifier? If it gets worse, I'd demand that the service station replace the gears for free.

I don't remember whether it was there before or not...all I know is like I said, now it whines during 2nd gear and the Overdrive to 3rd gear downshift only... Well we took it to the place and they said they were gonna change all the fluid out and put friction modifier in. So we get it back..everything's ok.. Then we take it to the local Mustang guy, Gene here...that's practically all he works on is Mustangs..so he does a sh*tload of work to the car, and when it's there we notice that the rear end is leaking fluid because the original cover, the bottom of it is bent way out of shape. Someone tried to jack it and missed the pumpkin it looks like and snagged the cover. So it was leaking fluid...Gene replaced the cover and inspected the rear end to double check that it was really a 4.10, and he tells me that there wasn't any friction modifier in it when he changed the fluid and added some.

Drove it for around..hmm...maybe 1-2 weeks without friction modifier.

Paid for their "servicing" in cold hard $20's.

I didn't go to Gene first because I didn't know Gene existed until AFTER this job! The guy at AutoPro racing recommended him to me....

The gears shouldn't whine in just second gear. They got no idea what gear your in, if their gonna whine, their gonna do it all the time.
The only thing i can think of is a bearing going bad (from lack of fluid) and there's a certain MPH that it doesn't like....

jimmy..all I can tell you is this..from my observations and listening.. During normal acceleration, I never hear the differential whine except it hits 2nd..for the first few seconds it's nothing, but then it starts to whine until it shifts into 3rd..then nothing and nothing in Overdrive either. When I'm braking behind someone, it howls as the tranny downshifts from Overdrive back to 3rd... And when I hold the car in first gear and accelerate slowly, after it picks up a few mph, it whines a little bit, and kinda comes in and out....
