I realize my car is an older car, but all of you guys have some serious track experience...and I am going to choose a motor that somebody in here is running.

Here is what I want. My car has a mild 302 right now. I want to build it a motor this summer that will move it to the low 12's..but it has to be all motor...and more importantly.....a nice cruiser. I do not want a radical engine that will not idle and overheats all the time. I have a 351 windsor and a 89 5.0L that I can build since I already have access to them. I wanted to go straight to the 351w, but it is heavier and I would have to go with aluminum heads. I am trying to keep the heads I have. 70 casting 302 heads...1.90 int. 1.60 Ex.- soon to be ported and polished-these will probably be what holds me back. If I go with a windsor, it is going to mess up my raim air (height of new block), will need new headers, engine mounts. and the like. Should I go with a 331??? This engine will be bolted to a built AOD-Just bought a PI 2800 TC-(2800 for a mild 302 though) and 4.10's. DO not worry about whether I will break this or that...jut want to know if anybody has built one of these combos and kept it very streetable. Thanx, Ryan

engine mounts will be the same with the 351 unless you want to lower it some which i would suggest.

overall going with the 351 will make your goal easier you can leave the 302 in the car untill your 351 is ready though the 351 will cost about the same as a 331 with good parts

I would have to switch mounts so the taller windsor would clear my hood....I guess I should have said this before, but the car is keeping the stock hood with the functional shelby scoop.

by the way, the car ways about 3000-3080 with me in it. thanx, Ryan

A 351 with a nonlockup convertor your early heads with a good P&P on top of already having the big valves in them and a decent cam and at least a performer RPM and a 700 to 750 holley should get you to mid to low 12's with all the drivability of any good tuned carbed car. In my 67 falcon (same as the mustqang for clearences) i just dropped a 351 in with teh perfomer rpm with a 700 holley and a 1" phenolic spacer clears the hood with a 4" (maybe 3"" need to go measure it forgot exactly but i thnik it is a 4 though) drop center air filter.

Kinda makes me wonder if I should just stuff the windsor in my car and enjoy the torque.
