Default Gears are unforgiving, but ..

Gears have to be installed absolutely correct or they will whine. It is a fun adventure if you have the time. Wear pattern and backlash must be perfect. You will more than likely need shims to get quiet gears. The RATECH kit from Summit has tons of shim for both the pinion and the differential.

There are good articles all over the net. Some things to remember.

1. You need a dial micrometer for the backlash adjustment
2. You need a 1 1/16" socket for the pinion nut
3. You need gear marking compound.
4. You need a way to turn the 1 1/16" socket with tremendous force. I had a 2 ft. breaker bar with 2 ft of water pipe extension.

Read up and jump on it if you want the experience.

And lastly there is no worse smell than 170,000 mile gear oil

If you use Ford ( Racing Products or Motorsport) gears, chances are you won't need different shims, but you still have to check everything to make sure. I know when I did my 3.73's (Ford gears) the old shims were perfect.
