Gear Install question
I got myself a set of 3.73's for my 95 GT. I dont know anything about rear ends except that thats where the gears go. I had a shop ready to put them in but then the mechanic started talking some stuff that sounded like bull.
He told me that when you pull apart the rear end in a 5.0 to put the gears in there is a component of the ABS system that usually ends up getting broken on both sides of the axle. They dont cover this either if it breaks and supposedly there is a 50/50 chance that it will get broken. Anyways, its some plastic component that is part of the ABS system....any ideas

I have never changed the gears in my car myself but there is a shop in Marysville, Washington about two and a half hours south of you that could help. There phone number is (360)-653-4786. Ask to talk to Mike. They may even know of a shop in Vancouver that could be of more assistance. They have a few clients from your area. I hope this is of some help. It sounds like the shop you talked to just wants you to pay them to do it. Good Luck

I've heard gear changes in sn95's are a pain because you do have to take apart the abs, or something of that sort. This was from a reputable mechanic who I know is not bs'ing me. I'm not sure about them breaking it though. ~Brian

I know that you are in Vancouver B.C. Marysville is 2.5 hours south of you. It is north of Seattle. Vancouver Washington is 3 hours south of seattle. You can try calling the shop. Just trying to help. Good Luck

It's the ABS sensor itself that may break. You may get lucky, maybe not. I got mine out, but I thought for sure I was going to kill them. Gear swaps in an SN95 are not really any different except for the caliper brackets, which obviously
is not an issue on drum brake cars. Setting up the gears is not a hard job, I figured for what it would cost to pay someone to do it I would just buy the tools to do it, then I could do it again, so actually they more than paid for themselves. |
