Grinding
Anyone know why my t5 is grinding when i put it in reverse? Sometimes it will only grind a little and needs a little nudge to push it into reverse... a few times it feels like tearing up my tranny cuz it GRINDS hard. any ideas?
Man, I am not feeling a rebuild right now... i just put the silly thing in. Peace

Hey there you it may need to be adjusted, whats happening is it is still spinning when you are putting into reverse, its like putting it into first while moving it will grind alittle. What you can do for now is when you are going to shift into reverse put it in 5th then reverse, it will stop spinning and wont grind.

In all T5 trannys reverse isn't synchronized, but it does have some sort of device that is supposed to keep you from grinding reverse that someone told me always breaks and doesn't work. There was a post on here a looooooong time ago about it. Don't worry about it man, it just kinda sucks. Put the tranny in fifth and then slide it back into reverse. like eeh1025 said, usually the mainshaft is still spinning and needs to be stopped by putting it in another gear that is synchronized. Also, try this, when you get in the car, put it in first and put the clutch in before you start it, then once it is running, keep the clutch in and bring the tranny out of first and try to put it in reverse. If it grinds, your clutch needs to be adjusted because there is no reason the main shaft would be spinning unless the clutch wasn't fully disengaged. Usually it will grind when you let the clutch out in neutral and then put the clutch in and try to go directly into reverse because the mainshaft spins up to engine speed when in neutral. Make any sense? Hope that helps.

I've had 2 mustangs and both of them ground gears into reverse. I concur with our esteemed colleage quantum on this issue. When you pull up and want to pop it into reverse, just go fouth-reverse. It will never grind again.
Be glad they dont have some convoluted reverse mechanism like on the saabs where you have to pull up on the shifter to put it in reverse or the corvettes where you have to pull up and then reverse is next to first....bah!

hey thanks guys, ill try that trick next time. as for weird tranny's... my first stang was a 80 with a 200 inline 6 w/ a 4 spd manual. I don't think that was the tranny that came with it stock... my dad got it from a friend of his who loved to piece his cars together... point is... reverse was just left of first gear and you had to push down on the shifter in order to put it into reverse.... btw, that car could make the quarter mile in just under 1 minute. hehe
