evidence of valve float??
Uhh, my car runs strong, but around 5500 rpm's it just falls on it's face, kinda flatlines? i have the stock gt-40 springs, im assuming they are having a problem keeping the lifter in check.
my question is, i read that alot of people here have used the crane 44308-1, is that a good replacement? 2nd ?: i will need to install these with the heads on the car, so i know i will have to use compressed air, or the string trick, but where can i get a spring tool? and how do i check installed height? can i get the tool from parts store? i do have machine shop connections, but would rather keep the heads on the car since its a daily driver...thanx, id like to see my tach reach 5900 rpm without floating a vale into a piston

for the tool, you can rent them from your local kragen. I would really try to pull the heads off if possible. Good luck! For replacing thespring, call Comp cams, they have tons of springs that should work.

Well compcams site reccomends part# 986-16 which are good up to .560 lift i believe, but they are dual spring, i hear you have to machine the heads for double springs.
I guess i'll call their tech line and ask, but if anyone here has dual springs, let me know what was involved on installing them, if machining was required. thanx....

hey yea sounds like what i had... valve float! I installed my setup into the car and took it for a ride, and at about 5000 rpms i heard a loud tinging noise and found out that the valve floated and shot mylocks through the valve cover.... luckly the valve did not fall in the cylinder or get damaged.... now the rpms did suck when it went higher so i think you have valve float. Get it fixed fast! I ordered the comp. cams dual springs with a .600 lift, titanium locks and renfoced steel retainers. They work great but this is what you have to do..
1. go to a local Autozone or car shop to rent the spring puller for use with the head on.... Its 20 bucks here but you get all your moneyback when you return the tool. 2. Dont worry about the valves fallin in the cylinder really.. just be CAREFUL to not hit them hard into the cylider when you decompress the srpings. 3. The valves should have little oil scrapers that should be plenty to hold the vavle in, so you can take some needle nose pliers to pull up the valve and put the srings on.. it is very simple 4. once you are done check everything over and make sure your rocker ams and springs sit straight. 5. DONT go opening up on the throttle for at least 1000 miles... if you do you could be sorry! 6. HAVE FUN! -good luck

smokinstnag, thanx alot, i know you have to break in the springs for a while, comp cam site says how to do it, like let it cool, then heat them back up driving under 2000 rpms.
I am going with the strongest single comp cam spring, they have 300+ lbs open, and 130lb closed, i was told by a for mechanic they would work, since that is the pressure's i need for this cam.......thanx alot man, i really am having a hard time dealing with this, i had to short shift on an awd dsm tonigh, which resulted in him pullling me, it seems they are only getting worse too.... valve float=performance killer.
