drag radials vs cheater slicks or regular slicks
I have a set of BFG 275/50/15 drag radials that hook great on the street, very little spin. But my first time at the track I was spinning terribly 2 weeks ago. Worst was a 2.39 best was a 1.96 60ft, I did mess with air pressure and found 18 worked the best. I have a C4 with 3K stall and 4.10's and it was about 90 that day. Slick cars had no traction problems at all. The 1.96 I was feathering the gas and finally felt confident to mash the gas at about the 60 ft. mark. My question is would the ET streets or Hoosier QT pros substantially cut a better 60 ft than the DR's? I don't want to waste 350.00, if I ultimately need a slick to get the traction. But if the wrinkle wall DOT's are only a 1/10 behind the slick I would rather stay in the street tire class. I did run a 8.2 at 86 mph so I know with traction I can reduce my overall et by quite a bit. My rear suspension is SSM lowers, battle boxes, Jegs adj uppers, 50/50 shocks, pinion set at -6. Thanks for reading.

I have cut a 1.72 60 foot on my E.T. streets with a C-4 trans 3500 stall and 3.73 gears.I think when it`s time to get some new tires I will get E.T. drags.

I've gone consistent low 1.7x with a best of 1.690 60 ft with my 275/60/15 BFG drag radials. That's with riding the clutch out of the hole. I run alot lower pressure to make them work. 10 to 12 psi. That's what works with my car.
With ET streets or slicks, I could probably dump the clutch at around 4,000 rpm & get a better 60 ft (maybe in the 1.5x range) than with the drag radials. I'll try out the slicks someday, but I usually race in a radial tire class. ------------------ 91 coupe 3.73's,long tubes,2 1/2" exh, ported stock t-body,ProM-77mm cobra intake, edelbrock heads,B303,1.72 rr's 36lb inj's,tremec, & a Paxton NOVI 2000!!! 11.020 @128.95 on BFG Drag Radials (275/60/15) |

Nothing compares to a good pair of slicks, if you want the ultimate launch. I run Hoosier slicks.

I'm consistantly in the high 1.7's on my BFG dr's. As long as I keep the psi down, not as low as Sisu, I don't see the reason for getting slicks.....maybe once I get on the juice

It depends a lot on the track too. I was a bit disappointed with the performance of my drag radials (BFG 275/60/15) when I went to the track. My best 60 ft. was a 1.99, most were 2.0-2.2's. That plain sucks. I went to a different track that actually pays a little attention to their launch pad and got a 1.76 on my second run.
The thing is even with a big drag radial you cannot dump the clutch at 4000 rpm. You have to slip it to get a good number. I prefer not to rag on my clutch so much, so I am selling my DR's and getting some ET streets. ------------------ 1988 Mustang GT 11.8 @ 123 (7/14/01) 1992 BadAzz Wrangler 1993 Explorer |
