Default Question about Mass air

I have an 88 5.0 so it doesnt have a mass air sensor. I want to buy a cold air. Is it worth it to get the mass air and what would I need to do to install it?

You dont need a mass air car to use a CAI. It will work just fine, unless you can't find a kit made for a Speed Density instead of an MAF car..but there should be one. MAF conversion isnt simple. You'd need not only a new MAF and connector but probably a wiring harness to accept it, not to mention a new computer from an MAF car. Royal pain in the ----....sure it'd be a good modification to do down the road if you plan to really soup the thing up, since the more power you put out, the more inaccurate the data charts that the comp. uses for Speed Density calculations are....

We tried putting on a K&N cononical high flow filter on our 88GT with speed density. The car idled like crap, I was told the speed density couldn't compensate for the addiitonal air flow. We took it off and put a stock filter back on and it idled fine.

There's others on this board that've been very successful with tuning speed density. We're planning on upgrading to MAF with a Ford Racing upgrade kit according to the research we've done - you simply have to touch one wire on your existing harness, have to swap out your EEC, add the MAF meter, new throttle body and you're good to go - hopefully.

Sounds like something was wrong with the Manifold Pressure sensor possibly....SD cars, from what I've seen, have a very good ability to adapt themselves..it's just in extreme instances, like supercharging, or high hp cars, where they can't keep up.

yeah i had sd for a while and never had a problem i had a idle surge that started when i threw on the 70mm tb but other than that it was fine, i ran the b303 and everything else in my sig except for 24lbinjectors, cai is no problem for sd car. But it really isnt worth the money, I see ur in chicago where at? I may be parting my car out soon, so there may be a lot of parts going for cheap.... lata
