My Smog Pump is going out.
the bearings are banging together and sounds real bad. Could it just freeze up on me? Should I take off this smog pump or get a new one . What would be the belt size if I took it off,. and what all would I need to do?

You'd better get it replaced right away, dude. Those things are notorious for locking up when you least want them to, not too long after the bearing noise starts. If and when it does, you'll be walking because it'll burn the belt. They're only $30 + core(for the 87-93's anyway) at any discount auto parts store, plus most come with a lifetime warranty. I wouldn't remove it for several reasons, but the most important being it prevents your catalytic converters from burning up. Just replace it and be done. Good luck.

Dude change it now!! Mine had a nuclear meltdown in the Albertson's parking lot. It sucked. Then the tow truck driver broke my fog lamp.

I have an off-road H-pipe too, but mine's still on there. Just in case some cop gets curious and thinks I'm running something illegal underhood, at least I can show him the pump (yes they are like that around here, even though there's no testing). If nothing else, it'll help the resale of it later. I know if I were to buy another Mustang, I'd be looking for stuff like that. It'd make me wonder what else has been done. Moral of the story: a LOT of work for about 1-2 horsepower. Just my .02

You better do something now cuz when those things freeze your screwed. I just eliminated mine, but i have an off-road h-pipe and there are no emissions by me. The belt size should be about a 76 or so. just take a piece of string and wrap it around to get a general idea. Good luck

Low tech low dollar answer.
Remove the pump and disassemble. Most of the time the bearings are just fine it is the vanes making the noise. The pump vanes are phenolic so just finish them off by breaking them. Once the vanes are gone you can run the pump as an idler pulley. It looks like before but it will never seize up. I did this to seized pump 6 years ago. I am still running this pump on my car today.
