I have an MSD Pro Billet distributor and every now and again if the car runs hot for whatever reason the idle gets all messed up. it idles rough and when I get on it it seems to ping under heavy load. I suspect when the motor runs hot like that it changes the timing curve. Maybe, the springs inside the Pro Billet get weird...
does this make sense or am I way off base?

Nah, I would first consider initial timing and the gas you use (92 octane?)
What is your initial timing set at? It could also be a number of things dealing with the MAF sensor or TPS. Take it one thing at a time.
