Unhappy Balancer questions

Hello everyone. I have a major problem that I need resolved in a hurry. Yesterday at the track the backing plate for the balancer somehow broke off. I am confused as to how all these balancers work and stuff. How are they counterweighted? Are the counterweights keyed so they can't go on wrong? The balancer I had says SFI approved converted to 28oz. Now, this don't tell me much. If anyone can help PLEASE DO!! I need to order a new one soon. I want to go with ATI or Fluidampr. I have the 5.0 HO timing cover and the balancer is a 4 hole. Thank you for help.

I might be missing something in your post but, If you have a 89 motor it should have a 50oz Harmonic Balancer & flexplate. Unless it was somehow changed when the motor was built?

Pre-1980 motors used 28.2 oz Balancer and flexplate.

Either way the balancer is keyed, to only fit one way on the crank. ( For dummies like me)

If a 28.2 oz was bolted onto a late model 5.0 it should have gave a good vibration. Maybe thats why your balancer came apart?

Its a stroked 351. I should have made that clear.

Hope I didn't sound harsh.

351 balancer and flexplate are interchangable with the 302 etc. And the years still apply. The small blocks are the same.

If it is a pre-1980 motor it still will use a 28.2 oz. Just go ahead and order a fluid dampner, they work great but a little pricy. Just bolts on one way.

I had a TCI rattler a few years back, annoying.

i have a 331 with a 28 oz fluidamper i bought from dirttrackthunder.com for 129 or 139 i think, it was really cheap but you have to order a special spacer for it to fit, i bought my spacer from professional products dealer for 15 bucks i think it was, the part number was 8006 or 81006 if i remember right.
