Default 5.0 Transmission Extraction Conundrum

I've been trying to pull the transmission out of my 90 5.0 (I blew 5th gear off the shaft with 11 psi at 2000 rpm). Apparently, the guy who installed the transmission for me a while ago was a gorilla and torqued the **** out of the transmission mount bolts and didn't use anti-seize.

I managed to get the bottom bolts out using a 1/2 drive ratchet and a giant breaker bar but there just isn't the room to get the top bolts loose, even with the back of the trans hanging down and a liberal dose of aero-kroil penetrating oil.

Two questions:

1) Anyone have any special tools, tricks, techniques, magic to getting those top bolts out?

2) If I can't get the top bolts out, has anyone pulled the motor with the trans attached? It seems like there should be enough clearance. How about pulling the motor with the intake and everything installed? It is a real ***** to get the Kenne Bell blower on and off with the engine in the car - I 'd rather pull the whole thing.

If your 5.0 is similar to my '94 5.0 Cobra, then...

I've shared your pain. Those two top bolts really suck...

What I did, was to attach the socket to one of those "universal joint" type drives, followed by a 12" extension bar, such that I could attach the ratchet to the other end, and have a greater range of movement, of course, you'll likely only turn the bolt a little at a time, but it should work.

PS. make sure you have a good quality "joint" when you attempt this!

Good luck!

r u talking about the middle top ones or the very very top ones up in the engine bay. if they are the very top ones, u must remove them from the engine bay. no sockets will work, just use a box wrench or even better a gear wrench if you got em.

When I rebuilt my trans I removed the t5 and bellhousing together, then removed those 4 bolts (with the bellhousing clamped to a table and a breaker bar on the ratchet).

If you can get a decent impact wrench, compressor, impact universal adaptor (standard ones can explode) and appropriate impact sockets and LONG extension you could remove them on or off the car with little trouble.

Good luck,

Rich D.

Pull the motor/tranny together. I have done it 7 (8?) times that way...
You just need a "leveler" to change the center of gravity on the block/tranny when the motor is hoisted int he air.

Since you are really after just removing the tranny, do just that. Dont make it harder and remove the motor.

Loosen the motor mount (WATCH for the fan), and lower the tranny down to the ground. You should have a line of sight at the bolts to be able to put a looooong extention on it and impact gun it off there.
