Educate me on rear ends!
Hey everyone,
I've got an 89 coupe that used to be a 4 cylinder. I'm getting ready to drop a C4 w/transbrake in it and want to swap over to an 8.8 at the same time. Well I've kind of came to the realization that besides the elementary basics, I don't know anything about rearends. Can anyone tell me the difference in a Detroit Locker and an Eaton? Also, how is a full spool on the street? What would you recommend on a car that's going to see the street occasionally but serves mostly as a track car? I want to get it in the low 12's/high 11's NA and then eventually spray it. ------------------ 1989 LX 5.0 Coupe 13.30's @ 106.7 while doing the aod shuffle...needs gear and converter. 1992 LX 5.0 Convertible Moderator SN95.com, Stangtec.com |

YOU DO NOT WANT A MINI SPOOL, IF YOU DRIVING ON THE STREET AT ALL. It's just annoying, an unsafe, and it'll eat your tires up. I went with a AUBURN PRO SERIES POSI, it was $395.

If your building a drag car, occasionally driven on the street, why not just throw in a 9"??
Detroit locker and Eaton are brand names... a 'spool' ties both axles together... they suk in corners, because the wheels try and turn at the different rates but they can't, good way to burn up some money, run a spool on the street (stuff breaks)... they were designed for 'straight ' line use only!!!! ------------------ Black,84 GT,ground effects, shorty headers, 'open' dual exh.,302 HO(no pollution control crap),T5,89 ported heads, edelbrock Performer manifold, Edelbrock 2122 cam,600 Holley, high volume oil pump... Some day (3:73 gears & N2O)!!! will this ever end???? |

I haven't considered a 9" rearend because I think it's overkill in my particular case. The car will probably never see any more than 650 hp at the rear wheels at the absolute extreme. I've heard the 8.8 built right is capable of handling up to around 1000 hp (is this correct?) so why throw a 9" in which zaps more horsepower? Besides...I don't have $2000 to throw into a rearend. $1000-1200 would be the highest I could go
Mostly, I want to know how the different differentials operate. For instance, I know that a spool turns both wheels at the same speed at all times. I guess mostly what I want to know is how the other levels of the differentials operate (mechanically) and what experiences people have had with them. Thanks. ------------------ 1989 LX 5.0 Coupe 13.30's @ 106.7 while doing the aod shuffle...needs gear and converter. 1992 LX 5.0 Convertible Moderator SN95.com, Stangtec.com |
