Default Timing Problem

On my stock 94, I have been told that 14deg is where to set my timing, stock is 10deg. Well it ran fine at 10deg so I set it at 14deg, and when I started down the road it ran fine but as I got in to high RPMs I noticed a rattle/squeel that I have never heard before. So I set it back and I still have that sound. Any ideas on the sound? What does detonation sound like??

That sound you heard is probably detonation (BB's on a tin roof). Advancing your timing gives you a little extra power, but you've gotta run premium fuel. If you had 87 octane in the tank, start using 93 and put the timing back on 14. If you had 93 in the tank, back the timing down to 12* and she how she likes that.

Well the problem was the timing sort of. The harmonic balancer decided it would rather be two in stead of one (only thing holding it on the hub was the pulley) so I replaced that and checked the timing that I had advanced to 14 then back to 10, and it turned out I was running 24 (big surprise), so I set to 14 and she likes that fine.
