Question Can I get away with this?

Ok I have just about had it with this timing chain cover gasket replacement. I cut the oil pan gasket like the instructions said to, but I refuse to use that cork gasket replacement. So I rtv'd the cut rubber oil pan gasket to the timing chain cover, and installed it that way. Seemed to work until I forgot that timing chain retaining bolt. So I took it back apart today, and now I can not for the life of me get the oil pan gasket to line up with the holes again. Can I just ditch that cut gasket piece, and slap down a thick layer of RTV? I am just not sure if that will hold or not, being the only gasket. If you need pictures to see what I am talking about just say so, and I'll take some right away. This is getting old!

Chris

Lol, Just be patient. I did just like you and cut the gasket and used a piece of replacement gasket.

If you did it once you can do it again

your talking about those corners? ultra black rtv. dont use those stupid corner inserts. i work as a heavy duty tech at my local ford dealership, and we use silicone period for a lot of the gaskets for oil pans and transmission pans.

No not the corners the entire piece that goes under the timing chain cover.

I used the replacement gasket and a crap load of silicone.

But I could see how silicone by itsself could also work just fine.

Yes I am talking about the entire gasket under the timing chain cover. If I could drop the front of the pan down a little I think i could get this to sit right, but I am not going to go that far to get this on here. I think I will go get some of the black rtv and try to make a nice thick gasket and let it dry. Thanks for the help.

hmmm not sure if you should use it on the timing cover area where the crank seal is where it loops down. try and get that rubber piece that should slide in the cover there and use silicone for the rest. But if worst comes to worst, i guess silicone will work for it all, if its used properly. Just make sure you prep the surfaces really well(no oil, grease, debris, etc).
