Default What do you idle at and what oil do you use?

I am having some idle problems and maybe it is because of my idle speed, It is set at about 650-700 RPM. Also I have low oil pressure and I'm sure its because the bearings are worn and the motor needs rebuilding but I figured maybe a heavier oil can get the oil pressure up a little until the new motor gets in. I am running 10w-40 now. What idle speed and oil do yall use? I had a post about my idling problem not too long back and I am still going to replace some sensors and clean the intake but if my idle speed now is low then it might fix the prob. Thanks, JB

Idle 800rpms
oil 10-30W Castrol

If you are already running 10-40W and have low oil pressure then the engine is in bad shape.

900-1000 rpms
10W40

What is your low oil pressure at anyway???
What is the most you get out of it @3500-4000 rpms?
We all have different ratings for low or high oil pressures. I assume this motor has stock clearences or just even a stock bottom end... right?

Try a 20w-50. Since yer in Fla, the extra weight won't hurt it. I run that in the summer time here. Winter time I go back to 10-40.

around 750 with Mobil 5w40 synthetic. Maybe bump your idle up a little (750-800) along with the heavier oil.

What is your oil pressure? Are you going by an aftermarket gauge or the stock one? If your going by the stock one you probably dont have low oil pressure, that gauge and/or sending unit is weak and that is why it reads low. I have seen a lot of these cars with little to low oil pressure at idle on the stock gauge when they really gave 25psi plus which in my book is sufficient for a stock type motor.

1200-1400 rpms! All you need to do is to let off the brake and the car takes off on it's own! This covers up lopey idle, bad PS pump, AOD issues and removes the need for a choke. Word!

I have always had poor operation on anything other than 10w-30, but my bearings are probably pretty worn. Anything lighter goes right out the tailpipe and anything heavier makes the car feel sluggish.

I idle at about 900 rpms and use mobil 1 SAE 50 racing oil. But, I live in southeast Texas where the average temp is in the mid 80's to low 90's. In a colder environment, this oil would be like molasses in the engine.

I run 900rpm and use Castrol Syn 10w30 I see no one has mentioned that when adjusting Idle you must check TPS and try to keep your range between .90 to .99 volts. Never go past .99 as this will affect WOT.

Good Luck
