posi unit and 3.73
Hey guys,
I just purchased a used 28-Spline Positraction (Traction-Lock) Rear Differential with ABS toner ring. I don't know what this ABS toner ring thing is and don't know if I need it. Also, I plan on buying some Ford 3.73 gears to install along with the Posi and a matching speedo gear for my t5. My question is, what else will I need in order to do the install. I hope to have all this in my stang by June. And I hope it makes a diff. Thanks, Roland

Sorry I can't help you on what all you will need, but I was wondering if you have set up rear ends before? If not, you may consider having a shop do it as this isn't something a lot of people tackle in their garages.

No, actually I've never messed with rear ends before. Do you think it would be wiser to have a shop do it? I was trying to do as much work on the stang myself (save $$$ ). Is it really a tricky thing to do?

Well, for most people (including myself) I would say they usually tackle almost every job on the car themself except for the rear end. Can it be done at home? Yes. But, you really should have a dial indicator (a tool most of us don't own) to set the backlash correctly. My step dad taught himself how to work on them just from a repair manual in his backyard, so it can be done. But in general, it is not the easiest job to do in the world.
If I were you, I would pick up a repair manual and take a look at what is involved. Then, if its looks like something you want to tackle yourself, go for. Just my 2 cents.

I'm just curious why you bought a used stock replacement traction loc for it? Was it an original 5.0? If so you already had one on a 90 5.0. Not sure about the ABS though. What vehicle did it come from?

oh naw, my 5.0 didn't come with posi unit. I got it on ebay cuz it was super cheap.

alldata sys. shows abs brakes starting in 1994 in a stang and up it should be ok to keep the tone ring. shiming the gears right is not easy if you don't know much about it! you can ruin a set of gears very quickly. so take the rear end into a shop not installed in the car could be cheeper,I know i would do it for less money anyway!

Yea, the more I get responses from you guys, the more I'm starting to think that I'm just going to get a shop to install the posi and gears.

wow.... time to laugh at me and call me names.
you serious about that?.... i thought i had an open rear end because when i layed rubber down, it didn't look I was laying two tracks. ummm, I didn't know 90 5.0's came with trac loc. Its original lx 5.0 not converted 4 cyl. i feel shame for having wasted the money...

Hey, you got to learn somehow .
The reason it probably didn't lay two tracks down is because the clutches in your trac-loc unit are probably worn. This is very common. If you go ahead and have a shop put in the gear, tell them to replace your clutch packs also (they would probably recognize this anyway and ask if you want it done). Oh, and see if you can turn around and sell that extra unit you picked up

If you look on your diff. tag it'll say for example(3 L 08). Than means you have 3:08 gears and a traction loc diff(L). An open rear end will say nothing in between the numbers.
